LocoRoco Sequel Releases In November In Europe
Permalink Oct 10, 2008 - 11:34 PM
Here's something for LocoRoco fans

Quote:
It was one of the best puzzlers to ever hit the PSP, which automatically means a sequel is imminent. We've heard that LocoRoco 2 is in development by SCE Studios Japan, but until now, we hadn't heard about a possible release date for any region.

According to D-Pad Magazine, SCEE has confirmed that this highly anticipated handheld sequel will release in November in Europe. The press release apparently wasn't too specific, but at the very least, Euro gamers should expect LocoRoco 2 to hit store shelves before 2008 is out. If you're not quite familiar, here's a quick description:

"The story begins when the happy and harmonious LocoRoco are attacked by the evil Moja army who want to destroy their beautiful planet with their evil music. Easy to pick up, players use the simple buttons of the PSP to tilt the LocoRocos planet back and forth, manoeuvring the jelly-like bubbles of fun to collect musical notes and other colourful items. As LocoRoco collect more musical notes, various bonus features will unlock, such as viewing maps."

We could make a guess as to when the game might arrive in North America, but with only a loose November date for Europe, accuracy could be tough. Let's just say we hope LocoRoco 2 is a 2008 holiday smash here in the U.S. as well. Those who are on the go quite often will certainly appreciate the continuous flow of puzzlers for the PSP.

PSP Updates: Direct Store Access, More Digital Downloads
Permalink Oct 10, 2008 - 12:57 AM
Big news!!!

Quote:
This is the update that most PSP owners have been waiting for, as it will effectively eliminate the expensive middleman known as the PlayStation 3. Want to have direct access to the PlayStation Store on your nifty handheld? On October 15, you'll have it.

According to Exophase, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has confirmed that the necessary update will launch on October 15, right alongside the release of firmware update 5.0. It's going to be easy as pie to get into the Store; the XMB will have a new icon that takes you directly to the good stuff. Also, it seems Sony will start offering certain UMD-based games as digital downloads on the exact same day as their retail release. This is a feature that will give consumers two options when a title comes out; they can either pick up the retail copy at the store or...go to the Store and download it! Of course, this won't apply to all titles, but here are a few that have made the list thus far:

* Yuusha no Kuze ni Namaikida or2 (10/16)
* Bleach Soul Carnival (10/23)
* Secret Agent Clank (11/20)
* Patapon 2 (11/27)
* LocoRoco 2 (12/4)
* Diamond Gunshot (Spring 2009)
* Resistance Retribution (Spring 2009)

Yes, you read that correctly. This should mean that Resistance: Retribution will launch in both standard UMD format and digital download format next spring! There are a few other notable titles on the list, and we expect more to be added in the very near future. Being a PSP owner just got a whole lot better! Just bear in mind that all of this only applies to Japan for now, but we anxiously await the official announcements from SCEA and SCEE.

Resistance 2 And Retribution: PS3/PSP Connectivity Features
Permalink Oct 09, 2008 - 1:02 PM
Quote:
From the start, Sony has talked about enhancing the connectivity between the PS3 and PSP, and they've been true to their word thus far. Perhaps the best example of that goal has just arrived, thanks to a recent post by co-director of SCEA's Bend Studio John Garvin over at the official PlayStation blog.

After Resistance: Retribution was unveiled for the PSP back at E3, a lot of people have been asking: will there be a connectivity feature between Retribution and the PS3's Resistance 2? As Garvin says, the answer is a definitive "yes." You will indeed be able to connect the two using a USB cable, and when you do, you'll want to go into the R2 options screen. You will see an option to "Infect your PSP!" and while it sounds bad, it's not. Doing this will give you "an alternate story within our alternate history," where a "different version" of the Chimeran virus comes into play. And it doesn't end there; the team is implementing something called PSP Plus, which quite simply allows you to play Retribution with the Dual Shock 3 controller! When you utilize this feature, the aim assist is taken off to "increase the challenge level of the game," but the vibration option is supported. This is some seriously cool stuff, and more incentive to own both titles, and of course, both platforms in question.

If you want to read more, head on over and drink in the full description
for each feature. Resistance fans just got a serious boost, didn't they? Just remember that Resistance 2 is scheduled to come out on November 4, but Retribution won't arrive until next year.

PSP-3000 to be More Expensive than Previous Models in Europe?
Permalink Sep 24, 2008 - 12:05 AM
I know there are some people from Europe on this site so I thought this would be important to post

Quote:
Sony has revealed pricing for the PSP-3000 model in European and Japanese territories. But in a move that has us scratching our heads here at PSP World, Sony will be pricing the newer model slightly higher than the existing hardware that it is intended to replace. In Japan, the PSP-3000 will launch on October 16 for the price of 19,800 yen ($180 USD). In Britain, the new model will cost £149 ($263 USD), which is about 15$ higher than the current slim and lite version.

While a brighter screen and built-in microphone are cool improvements, we can't understand why Sony would price the PSP-3000 about $16 higher in Britain. If anything, we were hoping for a price drop for the PSP to help compete with that other, less expensive, portable system. According to Sony Europe Boss David Reeves, the only price cut that European consumers can count on might be a short-term discount on the older slim and lite units to help clear them from shelves before the launch of the new hardware.

Will PSP owners still make the switch up to the new model, even with a higher price tag?

Rumor: Kingdom Hearts: Coded Coming To PSP In 2009
Permalink Sep 21, 2008 - 10:49 PM
Here's something for Kingdom Hearts fans

Quote:
Sometimes, it can be very difficult to tell which Square-Enix games are going where, especially when it comes to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. The veteran RPG publisher has issued so many different KH titles and spin-offs, it's tough to keep track of all the proceedings. Therefore, when a rumor comes around like this, we just shrug our shoulders and say, "yeah, maybe. Who knows?"

For now, Kingdom Hearts: Coded is only a mobile phone title (no, we have no idea why they continue to make those), but according to European game site PS3Life, the title is also coming to the PSP. Supposedly, they're focusing on other more current titles in the hopper for now, which is why Square-Enix hasn't revealed this as truth. Perhaps we'll get the announcement at the Tokyo Game Show next month, and if we do, it's just another reason to own Sony's sleek handheld. It already has plenty of great RPGs in its library, and while Square-Enix has been throwing a lot of love towards the DS, the PSP got Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII earlier this year. That was arguably the biggest title in the portable's short history so far, and something like Kingdom Hearts: Coded could be big as well. Of course, we would expect a more enhanced version on the PSP; owners won't want the same thing mobile phone users played, right?

Anyway, considering Square-Enix isn't in the business of making game announcements on a frequent basis, we'll have to wait until TGS 2008. They usually wait for big shows to release any facts and details concerning their projects, so for now, this is nothing but an intriguing rumor.

Classic PSP Puzzlers Headed To PC PlayStation Store
Permalink Sep 21, 2008 - 10:35 PM
This place needs some new news

Quote:
Yesterday, D3Publisher announced they will be bringing their classic PSP lineup to the PC PlayStation Store in North America starting this month. Here's your chance, puzzle fans.

Now, you PSP owners won't need the actual UMD to play some of the best handheld puzzle titles of the generation. All you need to do is log on to the PC Store and download those you wish to try; a half-dozen will be awaiting your perusal.

* Cube ($9.99)
* Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords ($14.99)
* WTF: work time fun ($9.99)
* PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient ($9.99)
* PQ2: Practical Intelligence Quotient 2 ($14.99)
* Dead Head Fred ($14.99)

Yoji Takenaka, president and chief executive officer of D3P, had this to say:

"D3Publisher is always looking to make fun and original gaming experiences easily accessible to everyone. We believe that making these classic PSP system titles available via digital distribution gives the games a new opportunity for discovery and the gamers a second chance at hours of enjoyment."

You may have passed on these games when they sat on the store shelves, simply because you had better options elsewhere. But now that all these titles are cheaper and more accessible, is there really any reason to pass them by again? Now that you've worked through the likes of God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII this year, perhaps it's time to simplify things and kick back with an addictive little puzzler.

PSP-3000 Officially Announced!
Permalink Aug 21, 2008 - 12:47 AM

John Koller of Sony announced today, at the Leipzig Games Convention, that the PSP-3000 is real and will be released in the future. He stated that the PSP-3000 will keep the size and features of the PSP Slim (PSP-2000) and new features will also be added to the hardware.
  • The LCD screen will have a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology so you can see the screen more clearly when playing outdoors. As you all know, the PSP’s screen is a key strength of the hardware, and this update adds an absolutely dazzling LCD screen to the handheld.
  • A built-in microphone allows for Skype calls and multi-player gaming communication directly from the hardware - eliminating the need for attaching a separate headset.

Despertar del Cementario Version 7 released
Permalink Aug 20, 2008 - 7:10 PM
Dark_aleX recently released Despertar del Cementerio v7. The main new addition is IDStorage restore, which fixes corrupt keys, or can fix completely deleted IDStorage. Dark_aleX also added a flash format, which I'm guessing formats the flash? If you already have v6 of Despertar del Cementerio, all you have to do is put the correct folder into PSP/GAME, run it and you're good!

Changes in v7:
  • A format flash function has been added which is useful to correct problems for some that get an error when installing 4.01 M33, or to have a custom partitioning of the flash.
  • An idstorage tools function has been added. It allows to create a new idstorage (including for first time, the regeneration of region and umd keys), change region (including umd region), or fix wlan mac address.

PSP-3001 is Real!
Permalink Aug 14, 2008 - 1:06 PM
That's right folks, the PSP-3001 is the real deal! Sony submitted the specs to the FCC in early July and the testing should be done by now. Usually testing takes 2 to 4 weeks. Engadget shared some insight about the matter:
Quote:
…the FCC’s tests were all focused on the 2.4GHz spectrum for the PSP-3001’s stated use of 802.11b WiFi (nothing new there) — no GPS, no 802.11 Draft-n, no Bluetooth.

Sony still hasn't made any official announcements about the PSP-3001, but we can all expect one soon.
